REVIEW
The dump at Lewisville forms a pretty good natural hill surrounded by good fishing spots. The back entrance is sometimes accessible from Railroad St depending upon construction in the area. Good views of the surrounding cities and a great place to practice flying. You may need LAANC to fly here.
DESCRIPTION
The Lewisville Dump, also known as the DFW Landfill, is located in Lewisville, Texas. It is primarily a waste management facility rather than a picturesque or recreational area. Given its function and appearance as a landfill site, it might not be an ideal location for capturing visually appealing drone footage.
Legal Considerations for Flying a Drone
1. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Regulations:
- Airspace: Check the airspace classification in the Lewisville area. If it is within controlled airspace (Class B, C, D, or E surface area), you may need authorization through the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) system to fly there. Use apps like Airmap or the FAA's own B4UFLY to check for any airspace restrictions.
- Altitude: According to FAA regulations, you must keep your drone within 400 feet above ground level.
- Drone Weight: If your drone weighs more than 0.55 pounds but less than 55 pounds, ensure it is registered with the FAA.
2. Local Regulations:
- Lewisville and the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area might have additional local ordinances or rules concerning drone flights. It’s essential to verify with local authorities or the city's official website to ensure compliance with any local laws.
3. Land Ownership and Privacy:
- Since the landfill is likely to be private or municipal property, you should seek permission from the property owner or operator before flying over it. Unauthorized flights over private property can be considered trespassing.
Specifics About LAANC Authorization
- Yes, if the landfill is in controlled airspace, you would need to get LAANC authorization. This can be done quickly through various mobile apps or online platforms supported by the FAA.
Additional Tips
- Weather Conditions: Always check the weather before your flight. Drones can be adversely affected by high winds, rain, or other adverse weather conditions.
- Safety: Maintain a line of sight with your drone at all times. Avoid flying over people, moving vehicles, or congested areas.
- Environmental Impact: Be mindful of the environment. Flying a drone can disturb wildlife and people in the vicinity, even at a landfill.
- Equipment Checks: Make sure your drone is in good working condition, and always have a plan for retrieving it in case of a malfunction.
Given all the considerations, it may not be the most visually rewarding or safest location for drone flights. It’s always a good idea to choose more scenic and permissive locations for recreational drone flying.
