PARK INFORMATION
Lake Wappapello State Park is the ideal vacation spot for a day or a week. The park offers a modern campground and cabins plus rustic camper cabins. Miles of trail for hikers, backpackers and horseback riders offer great scenery and picturesque views. With easy access to Lake Wappapello, the park offers opportunities for boaters, including canoers and kayakers, and anglers searching for crappie, catfish and bass.According to the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources, "Want to fly your drone? There are no laws prohibiting drones on state park grounds, but we do ask that you keep it to the main, open day-use areas and be respectful of other visitors in the park. If you will be taking photos for professional use or sale, there would be a process to go through to gain approval for that.

The park encompasses more than 1,800 acres and offers a range of outdoor activities including boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. The centerpiece of the park is Lake Wappapello, a large reservoir created by the damming of the St. Francis River. The lake and park feature scenic views, wooded areas, and various types of wildlife, making it a pleasant location for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.

Is it worth flying a drone there?
Yes, Lake Wappapello State Park can be a beautiful location for drone photography and videography. The combination of the expansive lake, lush forests, and varied topography provides excellent opportunities for capturing stunning aerial footage.

Am I legally allowed to fly a drone there?
Drone usage in state parks is generally regulated by state and park-specific rules. As of my last update, the Missouri State Parks system has restrictions on drone flights, typically requiring special permits for drone usage to ensure safety and privacy for all visitors. You should check with the park management for the most up-to-date regulations before attempting to fly a drone in Lake Wappapello State Park.

Do I need LANCE authorization?
LANCE (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) authorization is necessary for flying drones in controlled airspace, usually near airports. Lake Wappapello State Park is not located near any major airports, but you'll want to double-check the airspace classification for your specific drone flight location using apps like AirMap or the FAA's B4UFLY app. If the park falls within controlled airspace, you’ll need to get LANCE authorization.

Anything else I need to know?
1. Permits & Permissions: Contact park management to inquire about and obtain any required permits for drone operation. Some parks only allow drone flights for special purposes or may have designated areas where drones can be flown.
2. Respect Wildlife and Privacy: Ensure that your drone activities do not disturb wildlife or infringe on the privacy of other park visitors. Abide by the general drone etiquette and guidelines set forth by the FAA and park authorities.
3. Weather Conditions: Check the weather forecast before you fly to ensure safe flying conditions. High winds or precipitation can pose risks to both your drone and others.
4. FAA Regulations: Make sure you follow all FAA regulations, including staying below 400 feet, keeping the drone within visual line-of-sight, and not flying over people or moving vehicles without proper authorization.
5. Park-Specific Rules: Always adhere to park-specific guidelines, which could vary from state to state and even from park to park within the same state.
By checking all these aspects and planning thoroughly, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable drone flying experience at Lake Wappapello State Park.
