PARK INFORMATION
High above the Des Moines River’s flood plain, the grasses that sway back and forth in the wind beckon visitors to Iliniwek Village State Historic Site. The site is the only Illinois Indian village site found in Missouri and is thought to have been occupied from about 1640 through the late 1670s. Excavations at the site lead archaeologists to believe that perhaps 8,000 people lived in the village when Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette came through the area in 1673. Visitors to the site can walk a short trail to learn more about the village’s inhabitants and the effect settlement had on them.According to the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources, "Want to fly your drone? There are no laws prohibiting drones on state park grounds, but we do ask that you keep it to the main, open day-use areas and be respectful of other visitors in the park. If you will be taking photos for professional use or sale, there would be a process to go through to gain approval for that.

DESCRIPTION
Iliniwek Village State Historic Site is located in Clark County, Missouri, near the town of Wayland. It is a significant archaeological site that preserves the remains of a large Native American village inhabited by the Illiniwek (Illinois) tribe during the late prehistoric and early historic periods. The site includes interpretive signs and trails, offering visitors insight into the life and culture of the Illiniwek people.
Is it worth flying a drone there?
The scenic beauty and historical significance might make it tempting to capture aerial footage of Iliniwek Village State Historic Site with a drone. However, determining whether it is "worth it" depends on the rules and regulations, as well as your personal requirements for drone photography or videography.
Am I legally allowed to fly a drone there?
Flying a drone at the Iliniwek Village State Historic Site is subject to several considerations:
1. State Regulations: Missouri's State Parks have specific rules regarding drone use. Generally, drone flight may be restricted to protect the historical integrity and natural environment of the parks. Check with the Missouri State Parks department to see if there are any specific prohibitions or permits required for drone use in this area.
2. FAA Regulations: You must comply with all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations if you plan to fly a drone. This includes registering your drone if it weighs more than 0.55 pounds and following the FAA's operational guidelines.
Do I need LAANC authorization?
Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) authorization is typically required if you are flying in controlled airspace. Since Iliniwek Village State Historic Site is in a more rural area of Missouri, it is less likely to be in controlled airspace, but you should verify this using the FAA's B4UFLY app or another airspace authorization tool.
Anything else I need to know?
1. Respect Privacy: Be mindful of other visitors' privacy and the solemn nature of a historic site.
2. Check Local Wildfire Risk: The use of drones may be restricted or monitored more closely during wildfire season to prevent accidental fires.
3. Weather Conditions: Ensure you monitor weather conditions carefully before flying, as winds and changes in weather could impact your ability to safely control your drone.
4. Operational Limitations: Maintain a visual line of sight with your drone, fly below 400 feet, and avoid flying over people or animals.
5. Site-Specific Rules: Always check the specific rules at the visitor center or official website for the Iliniwek Village State Historic Site to make sure no other restrictions apply.
Before planning your trip and drone flight, it is crucial to perform thorough research and get all the necessary permissions to ensure a safe and legal operation.
