PARK INFORMATION
A red mill set on the blue waters of Huzzah Creek is as pretty a picture as there is in Missouri, and that’s the setting for Dillard Mill State Historic Site. The site interprets one of the state’s best-preserved gristmills, completed in 1908. Most of the machinery in the mill is still intact and original to the building. If you like the outdoors, the site’s location on Huzzah Creek in the Ozarks provides plenty of opportunities to fish, hike, picnic or just dream about the past.According to the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources, "Want to fly your drone? There are no laws prohibiting drones on state park grounds, but we do ask that you keep it to the main, open day-use areas and be respectful of other visitors in the park. If you will be taking photos for professional use or sale, there would be a process to go through to gain approval for that.

Flying a Drone at Dillard Mill
Is it worth flying a drone there?
Absolutely! Flying a drone at Dillard Mill State Historic Site could provide stunning aerial footage of the historic mill, the creek, and the surrounding natural beauty. The combination of history and nature creates a unique and visually compelling subject for drone photography.
Legality of Flying a Drone:
Missouri state parks, including historic sites, generally have policies that prohibit launching, landing, or operating drones. This rule is primarily in place to protect wildlife, ensure visitor safety, and preserve the tranquility of the park environment. Therefore, you are likely not legally allowed to fly a drone at Dillard Mill State Historic Site without explicit permission from the relevant authorities.
Need for LAANC Authorization:
LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) authorization is specifically required for flying in controlled airspace around airports. Since Dillard Mill is located in a more remote area, it is unlikely that it falls within controlled airspace requiring LAANC authorization. However, this does not override the state park regulations.
Additional Considerations
1. Permit for Drone Use:
If you have a compelling reason for using a drone (e.g., professional filming, research), you should contact the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for potential permits or special permissions.
2. Respect Privacy and Safety:
Always be mindful of other visitors’ privacy and safety when flying a drone. Even in areas where drones are permitted, reckless or intrusive flying can lead to complaints and further restrictions.
3. Check for Updates:
Park policies and regulations can change. Always check the latest rules and guidelines on the official Missouri State Parks website or directly with park management before planning your drone flight.
4. Other Locations:
If drone usage is a significant part of your visit, look for nearby areas outside state park boundaries where drone flying may be legally permitted and still offer scenic views.
Conclusion
While Dillard Mill State Historic Site offers a visually rich environment perfect for drone photography, current regulations likely prohibit the use of drones within the site. Always verify the most up-to-date rules and consider reaching out for special permissions if you have a specific need for drone footage.
