REVIEW

PARK INFORMATION
With views of the scenic Current River and a history as a corporate retreat, Current River State Park offers a peaceful haven for today’s visitor.
Current River State Park is built around the former retreat of the Alton Box Board Co. of Alton, Illinois. Constructed during the late 1930s and early 1940s, the Alton Club buildings themselves reflect the rustic architectural style used by the National Park Service in the early part of the 20th century. In addition to overnight lodging, activities offered at the Alton Club included floating, fishing, swimming, tennis, horseback riding and golf.
Today’s visitors to Current River State Park can enjoy hiking trails, two lakes and picnic sites. Park staff provides tours of the historic Alton Club buildings and explains the park’s history.According to the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources, "Want to fly your drone? There are no laws prohibiting drones on state park grounds, but we do ask that you keep it to the main, open day-use areas and be respectful of other visitors in the park. If you will be taking photos for professional use or sale, there would be a process to go through to gain approval for that.

DESCRIPTION

Current River State Park is a picturesque state park located in the Missouri Ozarks, near Salem, Missouri. The park is named after the Current River, a spring-fed river that offers pristine waters, excellent for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The park features beautiful landscapes, including lush forests, scenic bluffs, and clear water, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife observation, and camping.

Is it Worth Flying a Drone There?
Yes, flying a drone could offer stunning aerial views of the park’s diverse landscapes, including the meandering river, dense forests, and unique geological formations. However, it’s important to ensure that drone photography and videography do not disturb wildlife or other visitors.

Legality of Flying a Drone There
As of my last update in October 2023, the regulations surrounding drone use in Missouri state parks can vary, and it is essential to check the current guidelines before flying your drone. Generally, drone use in State Parks is restricted to protect wildlife, preserve the natural environment, and maintain the peace and privacy of all visitors. You should contact the Missouri Department of Natural Resources or check their official website for the most up-to-date regulations specific to Current River State Park.

LANCE Authorization
LANCE (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) is a system that allows drone operators to quickly gain airspace authorizations when operating in controlled airspaces under 400 feet. However, if Current River State Park is not near any controlled airspace (typically areas close to airports), you might not need LANCE authorization. Again, this depends on the exact location of your intended drone flight. Always check your current airspace classification using tools like the FAA's B4UFLY mobile app or an updated aeronautical chart.

Additional Considerations
- Respect Wildlife and Park Visitors: Ensure that your drone operation does not disturb the wildlife or other park visitors.
- National Park Rules: If parts of Current River State Park overlap with National Park territories (such as the nearby Ozark National Scenic Riverways), drone use might be further restricted since drones are generally prohibited in National Parks.
- Fly Safe: Always follow general drone operation safety guidelines, including maintaining visual line of sight, avoiding no-fly zones, and not flying over groups of people.
- Permits: Check if you need any special permits for drone operations, especially if you intend to use your drone for commercial purposes.
In summary, while the visuals and opportunities for drone photography at Current River State Park are likely exceptional, you must ensure compliance with all local regulations and obtain any necessary authorizations before flying. Always prioritize safety and respect for nature and other park-goers.
