REVIEW

If you drive to the top of Copper headed East, you’ll find lots of cool trails and lots of open space for a drone.

DESCRIPTION

Copper Trailhead is a popular hiking and outdoor recreation spot located in the Sandia Mountains, which are part of the Cibola National Forest near Albuquerque, New Mexico. The trailhead provides access to a variety of trails that offer stunning views, diverse flora and fauna, and opportunities for activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and nature photography.

Scenic Value
Copper Trailhead and the surrounding areas feature picturesque landscapes, including dramatic mountain vistas, forests, and unique rock formations, making it an enticing location for drone photography and videography.

Drone Usage and Legal Considerations
1. Legality:
- As of my last update in 2023, drones can be flown in many parts of the Cibola National Forest, but certain areas might have specific restrictions. It's essential to check the most recent rules and any specific regulations that might apply.
- Drones are generally prohibited in designated Wilderness Areas, National Parks, and near certain wildlife zones within national forests to protect the environment and visitor experience.
2. LANCE (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability):
- If you’re planning to fly a drone within controlled airspace (Class B, C, D, and some parts of Class E airspace), you will need LANCE authorization. However, Copper Trailhead is in a relatively remote location, so it's less likely to require LANCE authorization as it’s probably in uncontrolled airspace (Class G). Always check any airspace restrictions before flying.
3. Other Regulations:
- Follow FAA guidelines for recreational or commercial drone use. This includes keeping the drone within line of sight, not flying over groups of people, and not flying above 400 feet.
- Review any local or state laws that might supplement FAA regulations.
- Check for Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) which might be in place due to emergency situations, wildfires, or VIP movements.

Additional Notes
- Environment: The Sandia Mountains are home to diverse ecosystems. Be mindful of wildlife and plant life, and avoid disturbing natural habitats.
- Privacy: Respect the privacy of other visitors following ethical guidelines for drone usage in public spaces.
- Safety: Weather in mountainous areas can change rapidly. Be prepared for high winds and other conditions that might affect drone flight.
Is it worth flying a drone there? Absolutely, if done responsibly and within legal guidelines. The stunning natural beauty of the area can provide excellent footage and unique perspectives that are hard to capture from the ground.
Before heading out, it’s wise to visit the official Cibola National Forest website or contact local ranger stations for the most current information about drone usage and any area-specific restrictions.
